Botulinum therapy – a revolutionary approach to preventive treatment of migraine and other primary headaches

The use of botulinum toxin type A agents (BTA) is a revolutionary approach to preventive treatment of primary headaches. Controlled trials have proved the reliable efficiency of the method. Notably, various forms of migraine better respond to BTA therapy than tension headaches. BTA treatment is highly tolerable by the patients and is associated with minimal side effects. BTA agents are recommended to practicing physicians as new valuable medicines for treatment of patients with severe primary headaches.

There is given an analytical review of up-to-date trends in genetic typing of individuals. Due to the innovative technologies there have been considerable achievements in research on and understanding of the fundamentals of the molecular-genetic processes that lead to a number of human diseases (cardiovascular, oncological, neurodegenerative, etc.). The authors strongly encourage physicians to take into account information analysis results of genetic polymorphisms when working out an individual preventive, treatment and rehabilitation protocols for the patient.

Scabies has various clinical presentations. The main symptom of the disease is itching that is worse in the evening and at night. In practice, difficulties frequently emerge in diagnosing the disease, when allergic dermatitis is diagnosed instead of scabies, and as a consequence antihistamines and corticosteroids are prescribed. Botulinum toxin type A - from poison to perfection
The results of numerous randomized placebo-controlled trials and open-label studies under a wide spectrum of indications, including the use for treatment of hyperkinetic wrinkles in healthy individuals, show that BTA is efficient and has a fine security profile. BTA side effects, for instance, blepharoptosis or diplopia after injections into facial muscles, are insignificant, reversible and caused mainly by the local toxin diffusion in the near muscles. The basic conditions for prevention of side effects are professional knowledge of the peculiarities of BTA agents and proficiency of the physician.
